Gardening Garlic

Gardening Garlic
Question about planting garlic…?

This is my second adventure into garlic gardening. my first was a big fat flop. but I tried to plant in early spring. so I’m in southwest wisconsin and I’m about to plant. I’ve been reading and reading on this. some people say that if you plant the whole bulb (the small bulbs, without seperating the cloves) then it will get bigger. is that true? or should I just eat those? when you seperate the cloves, is there a point in planting the little bitty skinny cloves, or can I eat them too? how do I store the garlic I plan to eat so it doesn’t rot, can it be frozen and then used a bit at a time?

THANK YOU!!! :)

For most people, the main purpose in growing garlic is to produce more than you start with. A single pepper seed produces lots of peppers. A single tomato seed produces lots of tomatoes. I don’t really see the point in planting a whole head of garlic if you are hoping to harvest a whole head. Why not just store the garlic heads you would use to plant and then eat them rather than going through the process of planting, mulching, watering and digging up the garlic.

So, if you want to produce more than you started with, plant each individual clove. Get them planted before the ground freezes and the soil is unworkable. Each clove, regardless of its size, has the potential to produce a whole head of garlic. Plant each clove with the roots pointed down and the tips pointed up. Mulch heavily to keep the seed cloves from freezing completely during the harsh Wisconsin winter.

Garlic can be stored fairly easily. Cure the heads for about a week in a warm dry place. After curing, the heads can be tied together and hung in a dry place at room temperature. They will last for several months.

By the way, I like the SW part of Wisconsin – The river of lakes area is a great place to fish and camp.

The following link has lots of good info about planting, watering, fertilizing, harvesting and storing garlic.

Good luck!

Ant problem…?

I have an ant problem in my garden.their not eating the plants that were already established, only the one’s that were started from seed outside. I have lost all my bush beans, all of them had ant larva in them and two of my peas were the same and my zucchini.
what can I do to get them out of my garden. I have a square foot garden with good organic soil. Help!!!
Ok, this is what happened. all my seeds were starting to sprout, my peas were doing great. well I planted 9 bean bushes, only one was sprouting after a few days it stoped growing so I dug all of them up. The beans that were planted looked rotten and had larva in them, the same with 2 of my peas and zucchini, those were all seeds… the plants that started as plants are fine, at least they look really good and are growing well… what ever the problem is can it be fixed? are they going to eat more of my seed started sprouts?

Spread Grits or cornmeal in your garden. They can’t digest either and will kill them. Mind you, it takes a little longer than the expensive stuff, but it works.

Gardening June

Gardening June
Is it too late to set up a Gardening Business?

Finding a job is impossible atm and was wondering is late june/early july too late to set up a lawn mowing service or should i leave it until about March next year?

Also would i have to buy any equipment or should i rely on my customers to provide the lawn mower etc.?

Never too late. Some people are just now wishing they had someone as it gets hotter out, or they’re burnt out on mowing.

NEVER use others’ equipment. They will expect you to maintain it, and if it fails guess who is going to get the blame?

Good luck!
