This is my second adventure into garlic gardening. my first was a big fat flop. but I tried to plant in early spring. so I’m in southwest wisconsin and I’m about to plant. I’ve been reading and reading on this. some people say that if you plant the whole bulb (the small bulbs, without seperating the cloves) then it will get bigger. is that true? or should I just eat those? when you seperate the cloves, is there a point in planting the little bitty skinny cloves, or can I eat them too? how do I store the garlic I plan to eat so it doesn’t rot, can it be frozen and then used a bit at a time?
THANK YOU!!!
For most people, the main purpose in growing garlic is to produce more than you start with. A single pepper seed produces lots of peppers. A single tomato seed produces lots of tomatoes. I don’t really see the point in planting a whole head of garlic if you are hoping to harvest a whole head. Why not just store the garlic heads you would use to plant and then eat them rather than going through the process of planting, mulching, watering and digging up the garlic.
So, if you want to produce more than you started with, plant each individual clove. Get them planted before the ground freezes and the soil is unworkable. Each clove, regardless of its size, has the potential to produce a whole head of garlic. Plant each clove with the roots pointed down and the tips pointed up. Mulch heavily to keep the seed cloves from freezing completely during the harsh Wisconsin winter.
Garlic can be stored fairly easily. Cure the heads for about a week in a warm dry place. After curing, the heads can be tied together and hung in a dry place at room temperature. They will last for several months.
By the way, I like the SW part of Wisconsin – The river of lakes area is a great place to fish and camp.
The following link has lots of good info about planting, watering, fertilizing, harvesting and storing garlic.

I’m wanting to have an all organic vegetable garden in the spring, how do i do this?
I can’t use any kinds of pesticides because of my asthma, so anything I do has to be organic. I know I’m wanting to plant some tomatoes, cucumbers, maybe some watermelon, and maybe some pumkins. What all do I need to know before I start this little project of mine? Thanks!
Study up on what plants ward off pests. Like onions and marigolds. Then be prepared to plant those along with your tomatoes and cucumbers and pumpkins, and maybe your watermelon too. Go to the library and look up some information. Your local gardening club organization could probably help too.

A somewhat shocking vintage film, Garden Wise was a promotional film made by the Monsanto Corporation (still in operation) to advertise their latest fertilizer: Krillium. This pesticide is actually worse than it sounds: it’s chiefly made from polyacrylamide, which is horribly toxic to humans and no longer allowed! In stark contrast, the film is narrated by a beautiful woman with a lovely voice as …

The editors of the Smith & Hawken catalog have put together an excellent introduction to the art, practice, and enjoyment of gardening that will be of use to experienced gardeners and novice tillers alike.
